I've had these on my bike for over 5yrs now; they are loud and sound more like a muscle car than anything else. I still get complimented on them all the time. You do want the heat shield for what its worth and these pipes are going to blue ...then brown ...then black, from the heads to a foot or more down the pipe - this is why you want the heat shields, for appearance because my shields haven't blued at all, nor have the back half of the pipes. If you ride two-up, she can wear her shorts without you worrying she will burn/scar her right calf because the pipes don't extend that far. I highly recommend them if you aren't concerned with noise violations.
